Martin Taylor • Portraits

Review by Ken Dryden
Taylor's fifth release for Linn combines solo recordings along with a few duets with Nashville legend Chet Atkins and a pair of overdubbed duets. Taylor's fluid, unaccompanied playing makes him the most obvious heir to the legacy of Joe Pass. All of Martin Taylor's recordings for the Scottish label Linn are strongly recommended.

Martin Taylor • Double Standards

Review
Martin Taylor has long been one of the most accomplished guitarists on the jazz scene and while he has performed with a number of different guitarists in a duo setting, this time around he chose to play duets with himself via overdubbing. Choosing a dozen tunes, including standards, jazz classics, and bossa novas, Taylor weaves masterful mostly improvised arrangements, recording one line while imagining what the accompanying part might sound like in his head as he was playing. The duo performance of Duke Ellington's "Drop Me Off in Harlem" is a highlight, with an intricate introduction and a punchy chart that swings like mad. One can just imagine how his old boss, the late Stéphane Grappelli, would have enjoyed taking part on this track, along with the buoyant setting of Toots Thielemans' engaging "Bluesette." His poignant take of "Young and Foolish" and light-hearted brisk waltz setting of "Alice in Wonderland," two gems not played very often in the early 21st century, are great melodies rejuvenated by his imaginative scoring. His intimate reading of "Estaté" and lyrical treatment of "Triste" almost seem to sing though there are no vocals. It's impossible not to break into a smile and think of pianist/vocalist Nat King Cole when Taylor offers his take of "When I Take My Sugar to Tea." Double Standards easily doubles the listening experience for jazz guitar fans from start to finish.

Martin Taylor & Tommy Emmanuel • Colonel And The Governor

Review
by James Wilkinson
There's an implicit sense of mutual admiration behind the titling of this album collaboration between two of the world's gifted -- and certainly most decorated -- fingerpicking guitarists. Named in relation to Emmanuel's status as an honorary Kentucky Colonel and Taylor's lettered English roots, The Colonel & The Governor is primarily a collection of the duo's favorite jazz standards and pop classics, delivered in a way that betrays not only their shared virtuosity, but also their sense of playfulness. In the immediate years leading up to this release, while Emmanuel's studio output has been relatively sparse -- bar the impressive 2010 solo album Little by Little and the 2011 John Fahey nod that was All I Want for Christmas -- Taylor has been more prolific, collaborating with such jazz luminaries as Frank Vignola and Alan Barnes. Although Emmanuel and Taylor are both notoriously comfortable in the art of genre-hopping, it's Taylor's gentle Django Reinhardt- and Stéphane Grappelli-influenced jazz heredity that forms the basis of this set. So even though we're occasionally given brief glimpses of Emmanuel's accomplished folk and country leanings -- mainly through his tasteful rhythm-cum-lead playing -- it's clear that jazz is the order of the day on this release. When the duo run through "Jersey Bounce" -- a '40s swing hit for Benny Goodman -- and the jazz standard "Bernie's Tune," it's equally clear that Emmanuel is more than at home in this territory. Among the pop material on display here is the duo's inventive take on the early-'60s Kathy Kirby hit "Secret Love." Built around Emmanuel's singular use of harmonics, it's a clear highlight of the disc. Elsewhere, Taylor contributes two original compositions to the album in the form of the tender ballad "True," and the addictive, Caribbean-influenced "Down at Cocomo's." More than anything it's the duo's sheer enthusiasm for guitar playing that resonates across this release, and although their audible nods of approval to each other's contributions can occasionally be distracting, this is an album that should impress any listener with guitar virtuosity high on their agenda.

Stephane Grappelli • Olympia

Review by Scott Yanow
Violinist Stephane Grappelli has recorded so many fine sets during the past two decades that although virtually all of them are enjoyable, most are not essential. This fine concert performance with a quartet (which also includes the guitars of Marc Fosset and Martin Taylor) is typical of Grappelli's ability to infuse familiar melodies that he has performed a countless number of times with enthusiasm, energy and wit. Pianist Martial Solal and violinist Svend Asmussen make guest appearances but most of the focus is on the great Grappelli, who never seems to have an off day.

Courtney Pine • Journey To The Urge Within

Review
by Scott Yanow
This early Courtney Pine recording (the tenor saxophonist was 22 at the time) features some of the most promising black English jazz musicians of the time, including Pine (who also plays some bass clarinet and soprano), singer Cleveland Watkiss (who often is reminiscent of Bobby McFerrin), vibraphonist Orphy Robinson, and pianist Julian Joseph. While most of these players have not yet lived up to their potential (Pine remains an expert Coltrane imitator), this disc has its share of strong music. The emphasis is on Courtney Pine's originals which cover a wide span of emotions and grooves.

Stephane Grappelli & Toots Thielemans • Bringing It Together

This 1984 studio session finally appeared commercially on the Cymekob label in 1995, featuring violinist Stéphane Grappelli in a rare meeting with harmonica player Toots Thielemans; the rest of the group included guitarists Martin Taylor and Marc Fosset with bassist Brian Torff. Though producer Andy Kulberg claims in his notes that neither musician had recorded any of the songs, this is a bit of a stretch. Things get off to a good start with a swinging "Bye Bye Blackbird" and are only weighed down slightly by the tedious "Just the Two of Us" and Paul Simon's lightweight "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover." The rich ballad "Georgia on My Mind" rekindles the fire within the session and "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" is highlighted by Thielemans' matchless whistling. While this release could have been stronger with better chosen songs, it will be an essential acquisition for fans of either Grappelli or Thielemans.

La rica balada "Georgia on My Mind" reaviva el fuego dentro de la sesión y "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" se destaca por el incomparable silbido de Thielemans.

David Grisman & Martin Taylor • Tone Poems II

Review by Ken Dryden

David Grisman doesn't stick exclusively to mandolin on this top-notch duo date with guitarist Martin Taylor, playing mandola, mandocello, tenor guitar, and guitar as well. As on this album's predecessor, the two artists play a different vintage instrument on each track, though the music this time is much more familiar to jazz fans. The interpretations of such classics as "Swanee," "Anything Goes," "Blue Moon," and "Over the Rainbow" are consistently both stunning and fresh. The gems among the jazz compositions include Django Reinhardt's "Tears" and a tour de force arrangement of Chick Corea's "Crystal Silence." Two surprising tracks are the usually trite "Mairzy Doats" (an irritating song that was a huge hit in the '40s) and the very snappy take of the often tedious "Besame Mucho"; when musicians the caliber of Grisman and Taylor can make something out of unpromising songs like these, it demonstrates how gifted they are. Highly recommended.

Tone Poems 2 is an album by American musicians David Grisman and Martin Taylor, released in 1995. It is Grisman's follow-up to his collaboration with guitarist Tony Rice on Tone Poems. This is a more jazz-oriented recording, on which Grisman and Taylor play on a variety of vintage fretted classic instruments (altogether they use 41 guitars, mandolins, mandolas, tenor guitars and mandocellos).

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tone_Poems_2https

  ///////
